How to give feedback…
Here is the thing most of you will know me as the guy who likes or loves every post on Facebook. However, some people know me as the guy who gave ‘the feedback’. Here is the problem 95 percent of people don’t engage at all. There is a reason for that… The reason.
They’re afraid.
These models are afraid that someone is going to notice their paint job
They are afraid to give proper feedback, they are afraid to insult and so on and so on. I used to run a YouTube channel very small and all we did was give feedback on one another’s models it was a part of a larger community but the thing is I still have friends from that time. The reason is this, feedback shows you care.
Here is the short version.
Something they did well, something they can improve, something they did badly.
In psychology there are two effects that relates to this, the recency and the latency effects, one is known as first impressions the other one is basically we remember the last thing said to us. Also, know as well dah psychology. Here is the thing, people want you to notice certain things, it’s your job when giving feedback to pick up on that.
JOB? You mean giving feedback is work! Yes. Yes, it is.
Here is the problem everyone thinks that giving feedback is easy, it’s not, what most people are used to is just mouthing off. Giving good feedback is work just like good conversation is. Conversation isn’t tennis where you wait for your moment to hit the ball. It’s playing catch, it’s listening, it’s waiting it’s picking up on what they say. In painting miniatures, everyone has different goals.
Some people are trying to hide their shitty painting with good photography or out themselves as a fraud I forget it which I am…
Your feedback should relate to what someone is doing
What is the problem with that? You have to pay attention to the person behind the piece. Sometimes it’s very hard online because you don’t know the person. But being a part of small community you should know them and their goals. Relate what they have done back to their goal.
Here I explain that everyone has different goals and how to aim that way. Relate things back to their aim.
but all of this relates to one question that some people must be asking themselves by now…
Why?
Why give feedback at all when it comes with all of the risks of people being upset and needing to know small little rules about giving feedback why not just say you're plain thoughts.
Because, you care about them. That is why most people don’t give feedback at all or good feedback. Because they don’t care and they're afraid. I do. If you’re reading this, you probably do. So just give some feedback, try and be honest and caring and it will come through.
And it will mean the world to them.
Until next time friends…
Keep those brushes wet. oh and nice piece keep it up
